Men Under 23 Individual Time Trial - Press Conference Highlights
Marco Mathis (Germany) - Gold, Max Schachmann (Germany) - Silver, Miles Scotson (Australia) - Bronze

10 October 2016 – Doha, Qatar : Highlights of the press conference with gold medal winner Marco Mathis (Germany), silver medal winner Max Schachmann (Germany) and bronze medal winner Miles Scotson (Australia).

 Marco Mathis - gold . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

On his victory :
“I’m very surprised about this victory, but I’m very happy. The weather was crazy, crazy hot, but it was a nice race and a nice course her in Qatar, so [it was] perfect.”

On the course :
“For me the course was perfect, it was absolutely flat and technical so yes, that’s good for me.”

On whether he has a contract with a team for next year and for which team he would like to ride :
“I have no contract for next year and well, every World Tour Team would be good for me. I have no talks with other teams, so we must see.”

On learning from compatriot and triple World Champion ITT Tony Martin :
“Tony Martin is a crazy guy, absolutely extreme time triallist and yes I’m happy I can learn from him.”

 Max Schachmann - silver . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

On coming second for the second year in a row :
“It’s hard to say. I came here to win of course, but I think in the end it’s one of the best guys in front of me, my team mate, I’m happy.”

On the secret of German time trialling :
“I guess the Germans, we are a time trial nation. We are always good. Many people asked me the same question before, but it’s hard to answer. I knew we were here with a really, really strong squad. We almost did the best result that’s possible, so I think we did everything perfect.”

On conditions changing during the race :
“I expected better conditions for the last riders. You felt that the temperatures were a couple of degrees lower. I had expected it a lot worse for us. I was really surprised about the finish. Six riders of the top-ten started early.”

On learning from compatriot and triple World Champion ITT Tony Martin :
“I know Tony Martin pretty well and we are talking to each other. Six days ago, we had a training together and we were talking about the World Championships and about the right gears. I guess we can learn from each other, but he is the more experienced guy so I have more advantages of the talks.”

 Miles Scotson - bronze . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

On having to wait before being sure of a medal :
“Iwas nervous, the last ten minutes. Initially when I came in disappointed that I did not set the quickest time. For me it was still a relief to hold on to a podium spot. I was nervous watching Kämna come in and I was nervous because the temperature was dropping a lot and I was like, wow, I think they are going to be quicker, but the wind picked up as well.”

On his brother racing after him :
“Callum (Scotson), I rode a time trial with him a couple of weeks ago. I know he’s strong, he had quick intermediate splits early on, but I was saying to the two Germans there – they were nervous because they were doing some quick times – that maybe he was going to feel it in the end, which he did. But it looked like he had some bike problems too.”

On making up for his Olympic disappointment :
“I’m still disappointed not to ride in Rio, that motivated me today. I badly wanted to win the word title, that probably would have made up for it, but a bronze medal, yeah, maybe not.”

On his future :
“Today was important for me, because I don’t have a contract for next year and that is the big goal. I still got a solid result. I’m looking forward to the Road Race in the weekend and we’ll see what happens.“
“I like to keep going in the track the next couple of years and on the road too, but put the focus on the road for next four years, develop a little bit more in the TT, and do some classics races. That’s my goal.”
