UCI ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – DOHA 2016 OPENING CEREMONY ATTENDED BY HE SHEIKH JOAAN BIN HAMAD AL-THANI , QATAR OLYMPIC COMMITTEE PRESIDENT

DOHA, Qatar : 8 October, 2016 – The UCI Road World Championships Doha 2016 officially commenced with a stunning Opening Ceremony at the Qatar Foundation Ceremonial Court. It is the 89th Road World Championships and the first time that Qatar and the Middle East will host the Championships since 1921 when they first started.

More than 500 guests, including media representatives, government officials, UCI and LOC officials, Ambassadors from various countries and proud partners of the Championships, were present at the grand Opening Ceremony. It is the incredible generosity and support of UDC, Qatar Foundation, Qatar Airways, Qatar Olympic Committee, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Education, Lekhwiya Al Marai, Aspire, Al Shaqab, Aspetar, Q-Auto, Ooredoo, Dana Water, GL Events and Gulf Crafts that have made this event possible.

The UCI Road World Championships will showcase the beautiful landscapes of Qatar and its Arabian hospitality, while bringing people together and sending a peaceful message to the world.

The Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Khalid Al Jumaily, gave a warm message and an introduction of the speakers to appear on stage.

“The State of Qatar has set for many years now the objective of promoting sport and developing it in the country and in the world, encouraging everybody to take on sport activities. Hosting this major event in Doha is an important step in the history of Qatar, to be added to numerous major event staged in the country and which affirms the position of our country as a major sporting destination in the world.

We are proud of the confidence place in us by the UCI providing us with the opportunity to host this event, which will constitute a new stone in the edifice of our sport that embodies the vision of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, a vision which helped Qatar becoming a prime cultural, sporting, economic and media destination in the world” said Dr. Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee in his opening speech.

The Chairman of the Organising Committee UCI Road World Championships, Doha 2016, Sheikh Khalid bin Ali Al-Thani mentioned on his speech “We have been preparing to host this competition since Qatar Cycling Federation’s formation in 2001. One of our main aims had always been to bring the UCI Road World Championships to the Middle East. Now that it is so near, we all feel very excited. For a big number of people, this event will be the culmination of years of hard work. The UCI has placed its confidence in the Qatar Cycling Federation to host this world event after numerous years of success in hosting the Tour of Qatar for men as well as for women. Each time we hosted the Tour of Qatar, Ladies Tour of Qatar and Tour of Zubarah races, we were adding to our knowledge base in anticipation of delivering an exceptional UCI Road World Championships experience.”

Fahad Saad Al Qahtani, President of Community Development at Qatar Foundation, said : “Qatar Foundation is delighted that Education City has been chosen as a venue for the 2016 UCI Road World Championships. The staging of this event is a testament to the hard work and efforts taken by the nation to place sports and physical activity at the center of every citizen’s day-to-day life.”

In addition, the UCI President Brian Cookson stated that “UCI is proud and privileged to bring its Road Cycling World Championships to Doha. This year we are making history, as 2016 is the first time our Road World Championships are held in the Middle East and the second time they come to Asia after Japan in 1990.” Mr. Cookson specially thanked the Organising Committee, led by Qatar Cycling Federation President Khalid Bin Ali Al-Thani, for their professionalism and commitment to cycling. He concluded by declaring the 2016 UCI Road World Championships officially open !

More than 1,600 cyclists from 80 countries are expected to compete at this high-profile championship event, which will be seen by thousands of spectators and millions of TV viewers worldwide.

The dazzling ceremony used the modern performing art technics along with live technology to highlight the cyclists’ journey from their home countries to Doha, for their participation in the 89th UCI Road World Championships.

The show started with video shots of roads around the world, invoking the cyclists’ journey in their respective countries. A cyclist who traveled a long way arrives, crossed the stage and disappeared behind the screen, to appear in a few seconds as an animation on screen. The animation displayed several cyclists on their journey and upon arrival to Doha, sword dancers appeared on stage. The show ends with LED letters appears on screen displaying « The Race Starts Here » which is the moto of the UCI Road World Championships – Doha 2016 event.

This mixture of animation and live performances had the magical power to swept the audience and make them feel for some minutes this forthcoming cycling event experience.
